Left brain, right brain

Amazing how a sale can get you back to work! Luckily every time I seem to get despondent about my writing an email appears in my in box with an acceptance for one of my short stories. If only I could keep this upbeat on a daily basis. At the moment I’m writing in bursts as I’m in the middle of accounts and other left brain activities that seem to dampen down the creative part of my brain. I find it really difficult to get into full writing discipline mode after ploughing through things like this but it has to be done. That’s why I try to do it in chunks and then switch back over to creative part of writing.

And all the while I ask myself ‘Why can’t I do both’. Should I be able to set aside time each day for writing and still be able to concentrate on all the other things I have to do? It doesn’t really matter if I should be able to or not – that’s not my way of working. I have to stay with what’s right for me.

What works for you? Can you switch from writing fact to fiction, from one novel to another with ease – or do you have to have a period that reintroduces you to another way of working?
