You can put off writing forever. Are you one of those people who can’t write unless they have total quiet/perfect music/the right pen/perfect paper/optimum speed laptop? The list of excuses can be endless. Believe me, I’ve tried, and hopefully overcome, most of them.
All you really need to write is a pen/pencil and paper. Everything else is just a distraction. You may be one of those lucky souls who can write directly onto a laptop and I know someone who can compose directly to iPhone; sadly my thumbs aren’t flexible enough to create enough speed for that to be effective. But I do have lots of paper and lots of pens. I also have a gorgeous wooden box that my parents bought for me and it is filled with luxury pens. The gold Sheaffer set belonged to my father, the Parker an early gift from my husband when I first published and the Mont Blancs gifts he bought at random from his travels. They look beautiful don’t they settled in their grooves waiting to be used? And they wait, and they wait and they….wait.
Whilst they are stunning writing implements they are, like me, not built for speed. I can’t write with them for long periods. They are heavy for a start and I find that I have to think more slowly because they make me write more slowly. So my pen of choice is a cheap Pilot Hi-Techpoint that skips across the page at a rate of knots. I prefer the red and lilac colours for some strange reason. I think it makes writing more fun and less like work. And any small thing that helps me get started and keep going is a winner for me.
