THE SEASIDE GIRLS

Can I invite you to step through to the stalls or the dress circle at the Empire theatre in Cleethorpes? It’s our lovely little theatre on the East Coast of Lincolnshire.

Grab yourself a bag of sweets from the foyer. And how about a programme from one of our lovely usherettes? Settle yourself in the red velvet seats and sit back, relax and leave your troubles and worries behind you. Feel the thrill and excitement as the band strikes up with the overture, the hush as curtains draw back and the dancing girls step out into the spotlight.

We have a wonderful variety bill for you this summer – singers, dancers, a magician, a multi-instrumentalist, a cheeky chappie comedian and the wonderful star of the show, Miss Madeleine Moore.

Tempted? I hope so. This is a world I know and love – backstage at the theatre, not wanting to step out on stage but happy to stand in the wings and watch as the story unfolds.

THE LAST SUMMER BEFORE THE WAR

In the summer of 1939 Great Britain was facing an uncertain future. It was no longer if but when the country would be at war. People flocked to the seaside, hoping to forget their troubles – if only for a little while.

That’s what entertainment does – whether it’s a good film, a concert, a play or a night at the variety theatre. It transports us to another place, another time.

I hope you’ll join our Seaside Girl, Jessie Delaney as she throws caution to the wind and sets out to be a star!

Cleethorpes, 1939

With the country teetering on the brink of war everyone faces an uncertain future.

Destitute after the tragic death of her father, aspiring singer Jessie Delaney and her family have no choice other than to accept the charity spiteful Aunt Iris to keep a roof over their heads.

Jessie is soon dreaming of a life filled with music and excitement. How can Jessie escape the drudgery, support her family and pursue her dreams?

Through her father’s connections, Jessie finds work as a Variety Girl in a small seaside theatre in Cleethorpes. But taking the job means flying solo and leaving her family and her sweetheart, Harry, behind.

Friendships are forged, but will the glamour of show business lose its shine without those she loves close by? Buy the Seaside Girls here*
